News - Pervious Concrete at Cedar Point Federal Credit Union

Cedar Point Federal Credit Union opted to use Pervious Concrete for a parking lot at its newest branch in Charlotte Hall this spring.

“We are very pleased with the pervious parking; it is aesthetically pleasing,” said Barbara Horn, president and CEO of Cedar Point FCU. Chairman of the Board William Wagoner agreed. Both Horn and Wagoner believe the Pervious Concrete meets their needs, within budget and in a green way.

Site planners and engineers were challenged with providing adequate parking for customers, while meeting the Maryland’s new storm water management requirements. The design was originally specified to use permeable pavers for the perimeter parking at the Charlotte Hall branch, which was an environmentally viable but problematic option.

The builder for the project, W.M. Davis was familiar with Chaney Enterprises’ Pervious Concrete, as was Horn. When St. Mary’s County Planning approved its use in January, Davis conducted a cost comparison of the Pervious Concrete to the permeable pavers. As a result, the builder opted for Pervious Concrete. Pervious Concrete maximized the building’s parking capabilities, while still meeting storm water requirements in an innovative, yet cost-effective way for the Charlotte Hall branch.

Another major benefit of the Pervious Concrete paving is reflectivity. Exterior lighting is a critical security component for the credit union, and concrete parking lots require less lighting. Lighting costs can be reduced as much as 30 percent.

Pervious concrete permits rain to pass through the pavement and directly into the soil which replenishes groundwater, eliminates runoff into local watersheds and satisfies EPA regulatory requirements. This product is extremely safe for the environment by providing more air and water to trees and plants, filtering out water-borne pollutants.
